The Promise of Provence ebook

The Promise of Provence ebook

When I finished reading The Promise of Provence, I felt like I had spent the past week in France with good friends. For anyone who has never been to that part of the world, get ready to see and feel it through the eyes of Katherine Price, the protagonist in this story.

At 55, Katherine's life abruptly changes and she doesn't see much hope for the future. After years in a controlling marriage that had seemed quite normal to her, her world slowly opens up. Two women, as different as can be, step in to offer support and friendship and continue to be key characters. Cousin Andrea, who is called the Goddess of Serendipity, and off-the-wall childhood friend, Molly, are key characters throughout the book.

Katherine now has time to spend with her aging mother. Rifts that had developed over time are healed and secrets from her mother's past in Hungary during WW2 are revealed. That's one of several compelling side stories in the book.

Convinced to sign up on a home exchange site, Katherine is surprised by the response and before long spends two weeks in a farmhouse in Provence. Her trip is filled with interesting characters and a wonderful Yellow Lab name Picasso.

Katherine returns home to Toronto with a new attitude and before long life takes more unexpected turns.

I'm not going to say anything more about the story as I don't want to give any spoilers. Patricia Sands writes in a way that makes you feel glad you were invited along for the adventure. It's a long book because a lot happens and I enjoyed every minute of the story.

  1. I was lucky enough to read this book WHILE I was traveling to and in France. This is a touching story that, well, gives you hope through sadness. It shows you how a little change in scenery can completely change the landscape of your life.
The descriptions of France were amazing and this book is perfect for anyone who longs to be a free spirit. Although it's about a women in the later years of your life, I think the lessons learned are relatable to women of any age. And there's a bit of romance, which I all think we know that I love :)

  3. How delightful to gobble up this novel while I'm actually living in the places that Sands writes of. In so many ways, the heroine's life parallels mine which makes it an even better connection. Repeatedly, the reader is taken to the senses (tastes, smells, sights) of Provence - but even more - the universal feelings of retribution, isolation, fear, friendship, delight and trust are dealt with in such a manner, I couldn't put the book down. I was connected and I enjoyed being transported and affirmed, without being patronized. How lovely.

  4. I last travelled to France several decades ago as a young woman - exactly like this story's central character - Katherine. One might argue, the true central character is actually beautiful and historic southern France - Provence, the Riviera and the people, places, foods and wines which make France a succulent paradise. The author has captured the wonderful flavors, textures, colors, details of daily French life exactly as I want to recall and rediscover them. "The Promise of Provence" is engaging and happily optimistic and a true inspiration to the many of us who "start over" well into our senior decades. The reader will enjoy the family, friendships, loves and understanding which bloom in these pages. Oui!
