Just got mine and put it together!

Strathwood Basics Hardwood Chaise Lounge

Strathwood Basics Hardwood Chaise Lounge

I bought two of these lounge chairs last summer (2011). Do NOT be scared off by the older reviews...I too think the company must have made some drastic improvements. The stain has not run - in fact, I don't think they arrive stained at all, but a natural deep golden color, oil-rubbed for protection. Regardless, rain has not caused running of any kind. The trays on both chairs still work for me a year later (Michigan - stored in basement Oct-May) - and are a very clever and useful design element. The wheels also work fine and are wonderful for the constant patio movement at my house.

A couple of notes:
...the first chair took me about 40 minutes to assemble alone (female, unskilled carpenter!)as I waded through the directions, the second only half that, as I knew what I was doing. Near completion of the second, I found that one of the leg braces was severely split (the only defect in both). Since they didn't have parts, Amazon cooperatively sent a complete new chair - arriving w/in 2 days. They instruceted me to carefully open the box, exchange the part I needed with the damaged part, seal it and send it back to them all postage paid. Thank you Amazon!!

...standard patio chaise lounge cushions fit just fine
...I highly recommend annual (or more often) teak oil. I just did mine after bringing them out for the second season. The oil brought out the richness of the wood and brought back a deeper warmer color. And it soaked in within a day, so they don't feel oily.

They look better than new and I'm still getting complements on them. I would definitely recommend this chair...

  1. I received this chaise yesterday and just finished putting it together. Only time will tell how well it stands up to weather and use, but my first impression was very favorable.

Quality of materials: The wood is fine grained and dense, appearing to be all heartwood. It may be lighter than teak, but it seems heavier than most North American hardwoods. Hardware is not stainless or bronze, but appears to be zinc-plated and coated with a lacquer. All user-installed screws and bolts accept an internal hex-head (allen) wrench, which is included.

Finish: Smoothly sanded, no splinters, with an attractive teak oil finish. If you're going to leave it outside, it needs another coat of teak oil right away, in my opinion, to protect the wood.

Packaging: Comes in a long, flat, heavy, banded cardboard box. As the product is made in Vietnam, the padding is typically Asian, i.e., a few extra strips of cardboard are the only protection. One end of the one of the two long pieces of wood was bashed and slightly split, probably because these ends are square, not rounded like most other "at risk" ends. Luckily, these vulnerable pieces are covered by another piece that screws into it, so the damage is not visible in the assembled product. I "Gorilla-glued" the split piece anyway, just because.

Assembly: Is a snap. A "foot-piece," the leg brackets and the wheels are all that need to be screwed on. Everything fit well, and the holes all lined up. An extra allen wrench and two extra screws were in my package. I found that by heaving the carton on a couple of horses and removing it's "lid" (the carton top overlaps the sides, like a shoe-box) I was able to apply teak oil to the underside and assemble the chaise completely without removing it from the box. Pulled it out of the box, fully-assembled, set it down upright on the patio, and oiled the top side. Voila! Oiled and assembled in a jiffy!

  3. These are great. Excellent value and classic style. I don't understand why one reviewer said they are not sturdy. Nothing could be further from the truth. These are heavy and sturdy and stand up to the weight of even large men! I would buy these again. Highly recommend.

  4. I bought two of these, one for my mom and one for my mother-in-law. When they are at the house no one else is allowed to use them without thier say so. I have scored like a thousand more points from each of them for getting these lounge chairs.

These are great lounges, easy to assemble and the sliding table makes a great margarita holder. One did arrive slightly damaged and Amazon got right on it. They arranged for a replacement to be sent out, via next day air!! They also arranged for the damaged item to be picked up and returned on thier dime. I love my moms, I love the chairs and I love Amazon.com.

  5. Excellent value... look great... only suggestion is that you may need to pre-drill some of the holes as they are not big enough for the screws provided.

  6. Super pleased, could not be more thrilled. I so love this lounge, just started my second season with it and it is as good as ever. Very comfortable and sturdy. It held what ever abuse we gave it. We live in very humid weather and have had no problems or color changes. I would buy again!!

  8. I wanted to buy a chaise lounge forever and couldn't believe it when I saw this one for the price. When I got it I was even more pleased! I love the wood, looks great, and I love the pull out drink rack, adds to it alot! I live in Las Vegas so I am not expecting it to rain alot, but from reading older reivews I am being cautious of the fact it could bleed onto my patio, so I went to Home Depot and bought a bottle of teak oil, I hope it works. I have no complaints and I would say definately purchase this chair if you are debating. I will write another review when the chair makes it through the hot, sunny vegas summer. So far it's been a great buy! Oh, and I wanted to add the assembly is very simple! Enjoy!
